Questions To Ask Your Wedding Venue When Planning an Eco- Wedding

If you’ve made the commitment to go green and plan an eco-friendly wedding, then choosing eco-friendly wedding food is an absolute must. The average UK wedding produces around 400-700 pounds of solid waste and 14.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide, yes that’s right, from just one wedding day! Going green and choosing eco-friendly wedding food can help to hugely reduce food wastage, and carbon footprint and make your special day even more special by helping the planet.
So, when you’re searching for caterers to supply your eco-friendly wedding food you need to make sure they’re delivering a green service and are doing everything they can to help the planet. Here are some questions to ask…
o1 - Where are you based?
This may seem obvious but if you’re getting married somewhere where you don’t know the area then it’s a sensible question. The more local they are to the venue you are hosting your wedding day at, the better it is! This reduces travel time for suppliers and staff, thus reducing carbon footprint and of course, is supporting local business too.
o2 - Do you source locally?
Do they source locally, and how much of their produce is sourced locally? If they pride themselves on providing eco-friendly wedding food then they will source as much as possible from local suppliers, from meat to fish to raw ingredients too!
o3 - Do you offer vegetarian/vegan full menu options?
You may want to opt for a full vegetarian or vegan menu on your wedding day, after all, statistics show a vegetarian diet has twice less carbon footprint than one that contains meat. If you decide to go down this route you will need to make sure your caterers have experience in offering a mouth-watering yummy menu. Make sure that their menus include in-season produce too. You never know you might turn some meat-eaters heads too, highlighting how delicious a vegetarian diet can be leading them to make smaller changes to their diet. Every little helps when it comes to saving the planet!
o4 - Do your catering packages have bio-degradable dinnerware?
Depending on your wedding venue you will use either crockery or disposable dinnerware. Washable crockery is always best, however, if this isn’t an option make sure that any dinnerware being used is bio-degradable and there is a way of recycling this.
05 - Do you take responsibility for wastage?
Find out who is responsible for any wastage, and don’t just presume that this will be taken care of. Are the caterers responsible for food wastage? Do they have practices in place for distributing or composting this? They may have some recyclable packaging that your guests can take food home in, or they may arrange for it to go to a local charity. There are lots of different ways to make sure that food wastage is dealt with sustainably. You may also want to ask about their policy and practices on single-use plastic
Do you share my green values?
I’m committed to sustainability, and I believe an eco-friendly wedding doesn’t have to mean sacrificing quality, and you can have a day that’s exactly as you imagined whilst being kind to the planet.
